
AI: A Journey Through Time
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the world as we know it. With the emergence of readily available AI tools like ChatGPT, Bard, and others, it may seem like AI is a brand new phenomenon. However, AI has been around for much longer than you might think, and the information presented here is based on research from reputable sources, including commonly read business and scientific journals. In fact, the concept of AI dates back to the 1950s, when computer scientist Alan Turing explored the mathematical possibility of artificial intelligence. He theorized that machines, like humans, could use available information and reasoning to solve problems and make decisions1.

In 1956, a historic conference, the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence (DSRPAI), was held at Dartmouth College. This conference brought together top researchers from various fields for an open-ended discussion on AI. It was at this conference that the term “artificial intelligence” was coined1. This foundational work in areas like natural language processing paved the way for the AI tools we have available today, such as ChatGPT2.
It’s important to acknowledge that the development of AI hasn’t always been a smooth upward trajectory. There have been periods, often referred to as “AI winters,” when funding for AI research dried up and interest in the field waned. This was often due to unmet expectations or technological limitations at the time3. However, just like the seasons, AI research has seen a resurgence, with renewed vigor and investment leading to the advancements we see today.

This era saw innovations like the first Roomba, the robotic vacuum cleaner that navigates our homes autonomously, and the first commercially available speech recognition software on Windows computers5. These early examples demonstrated the potential for AI to impact our daily routines and simplify tasks.

Following these early AI agents, the 1980s saw the rise of expert systems in various fields. Expert systems are computer programs designed to mimic the decision-making of a human expert in a specific field. For example, expert systems were used to diagnose medical conditions, provide financial advice, and even configure computer systems.

AI has continued to evolve in recent years, with the development of new technologies such as machine learning and deep learning. These technologies have led to the creation of even more sophisticated AI applications, such as self-driving cars, facial recognition software, and medical image diagnostics2. They were amazed at how much more efficient their operations became and how much their customers appreciated the quick response times.
